The Malayan flying fox is one of the largest bat species in the world, famous for its impressive wingspan, which can reach up to 1.5 metres. Despite its name, it does not fly like a fox at all. It is a fruit bat that feeds on figs, mangoes, and a wide variety of other fruits. Found across Southeast Asia, these bats play a vital role in pollination and seed dispersal, helping forests regenerate and keeping ecosystems healthy and balanced. It's flying-fox birthing season and our workload is increasing daily mostly due to the rescue of flying-foxes out of large aperture anti bird netting thrown over fruit trees. However, on this occasion, it was a child's backyard soccer net that trapped poor Susan and her baby. Now in care with us and with her injuries cleaned and dressed, Susan will hopefully be able to still care for her baby whilst in rehab. Susan's baby has received sub cut fluids and I'll be checking on his condition daily un
