DAY OF THE TAILS Jèrriais names for cleavers (also known as sticky weed) include ‘fliancouais’ and ‘flianque’, meaning ‘throw’. In Jersey’s native language, 1 April is ‘lé Jour des Coues’, which translates as ‘the day of the tails’. Pranksters would throw cleavers onto the back of unsuspecting people and the plant would stick there and resemble a tail.
