Ok, everyone. It’s go time. As we wrap up a full weekend closure of NB I-5 by 5 a.m. Monday morning, we want to help you prepare for tomorrow’s commute and for what comes next: Today and tonight, crews are finishing the work needed to set the workzone so that they can work safely and you can travel safely while major preservation work is underway. We’ve got pavement curing, final striping, new signage, installing barrels and debris barriers, and sweeping and cleanup. This is what it takes to mov

Introducing new green and amber LED lights for our snowplows! They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Well, after noticing other states implementing green lights into their snowplow fleets, we decided to follow suit in an effort to improve the safety of both our operators and the traveling public. These new lights are six times brighter than the old ones, making them distinguishable and much easier to see. While you will likely see our new “green lit” plows if you travel through the

No biggie, just dropping explosives from a helicopter to trigger an avalanche on I-90 Snoqualmie Pass (don't worry, we stopped westbound traffic today to get this done). | WSDOT

Snow continues to fall Wednesday morning as you can see in this video in Spokane. Chains are required for all vehicles except AWD/4WD over I-90 Snoqualmie Pass. So far we're seeing drivers do a pretty good job giving our plows room to work. Please keep it up, take it slow, follow traction requirements and be prepared for possible delays or closures. The forecast calls for snow basically through the weekend with a few breaks here and there. | WSDOT

It's a winter wonderland on US 2 Stevens Pass and here's a look at a couple of our snow plows clearing the highway Wednesday morning. A huge thanks to our maintenance and other road crews for their hard work keeping our highways safe. Help them out by giving them room, staying alert, driving for conditions and being prepared for winter weather. | WSDOT

Yikes! Heading over US 2 Stevens Pass? Be prepared as snow has been falling. Stay alert for our crews clearing the highways. Slow down, give them as much room as possible. Here's more info about being safe around snow and ice removal work. https://www.wsdot.com/winter/operations.htm | WSDOT

A growing state needs a smart transportation future – and rail is key. In the next two decades, millions more people will call this state home and demand for efficient, sustainable transportation will be greater than ever. That’s why WSDOT is updating the State Rail Plan. This provides guidance for how passenger and freight trains can help reduce congestion, enhance community safety and support economic and environmental goals. Tomorrow we'll be holding our WSDOT Worker Memorial event, a day we gather to remember our workers who have been killed on the job. Please take a moment to listen to this message from Secretary of Transportation Roger Millar, and help us honor road workers who have died or been injured by always slowing down, focusing and giving plenty of space around work zones. Thank you. | WSDOT

Good Friday morning. Today marks the end of National Work Zone Awareness Week, but not the end of the need to keep road workers safe. We often post about incidents that happen, but please watch our video to hear the experiences of some of our crew members who are out there daily working on our roads. We hope this reminds everyone that underneath their safety gear, these are real people with friends and family who want to go home safely every day. Please continue to do your part to help make that

One of the busiest areas for our snowplow drivers this week was around I-90 in the Spokane area. Here's a close-up view of our crews working to clear snow and ice. It's going to be a long winter so please continue to keep road crews safe. Slow down, be patient, give them room and let them help you get where you're going safely! | WSDOT

We're seeing a lot of wildlife activity on the I-90 Snoqualmie Pass corridor lately. Here's a couple looks. The first is of four elk just after they crossed the new wildlife overcrossing from north to south Monday afternoon. A couple of them look like they had to work off a little extra energy. The second is a thermal video of a deer wading across Keechelus Lake and being tagged along with by a nearby beaver. | WSDOT

You might forget a near miss. They won’t. We’ve been talking a lot this month about work zone safety. And if you’re wondering, “Is it really THAT big of a problem?” look no further than this near-unanimous raise of hands from our maintenance crews around the state. Almost all of our road workers have been involved in a near-miss situation. And while, thankfully, those don’t leave physical scars, those moments stick with all of them. Their office is the highway, their cubicle walls are constructi

One of the other major challenges our crews try to handle this time of year is drifting snow, which can create whiteout conditions. Here's a look at our crews earlier this week dealing with drifting snow on US 97 about 15 miles south of Okanogan. This is a new area for this type of issue as a recent fire destroyed large sagebrush and trees, leaving little to keep the snow from being blown onto the road. Big thanks to our crews, these can be some really challenging and hazardous conditions. | WSD

While Work Zone Safety Awareness month is winding down, our commitment to our road workers and work zone safety remain the same. We’ve shared stories of frontline crews, written blogs, shared photos and videos, talked with the media, lawmakers and ordinary folks like you and me! But the ongoing need to keep everyone safe remains unchanged. Road crews are spouses, children, grandparents, siblings and friends and they all deserve to go home to their loved ones at the end of their shifts. Please sl

How about we end the week with a few more wildlife posts? First one is a bobcat crossing the I-90 wildlife bridge. It's the seventh bobcat we've seen use the overcrossing since 2018 but the first that we've seen use it in the daylight. Check back later today for a couple other images we got this week. | WSDOT

A little friendship over the weekend on the I-90 wildlife bridge as one coyote takes off before pausing to wait for another as they head over the overcrossing together. Somewhere in the distance "You've Got A Friend In Me" played quietly across Snoqualmie Pass. ...probably. | WSDOT

Building a highway underneath Seattle With a time-lapse camera mounted 54-feet high, you almost get a bird’s-eye view of work inside Seattle’s SR 99 tunnel. As the tunneling machine Bertha builds the tunnel, road crews are right behind – building the foundations, walls and the top deck of the double-deck highway drivers will travel on when the tunnel opens. Take a look. | WSDOT
