Splish splash! This herring gull was admitted after he was found unable to stand or fly, feathers covered in feces, and with an abrasion to one wing. He was pretty lethargic and it seemed like he was not able to use his legs at all, so we feared a spinal injury. Fortunately, after a day of rest and medical treatment, he started sitting up on his hocks a little bit, which was a good sign. Herring gulls are the most common gulls in the North Atlantic and can be found across much of coastal North America in winter. This Herring gull was found in Pompano Beach walking, but unable to fly. An intake exam revealed the bird was thin, struggling to stand, and very weak with a slow blink. With symptoms consistent with botulism, this patient is currently receiving care in our Wildlife Ward.
