As hard as i try I can't use my serial port with secure CRT or hyper terminal to console to my router. It can't open COM 1. I checked the bios (it's enabled for COM 1) and there are no conflicts ...

The cash drawer I am speaking about requires an RS-232 serial port, so yes, it does need the 5V signaling. That signal is what trips the cash drawer's solenoid thereby allowing it to open.
