Canadian wildfire smoke has caused air quality in Washington DC to go beyond Code Red into Code Purple, "Very unhealthy" levels.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has declared a Code Purple Air Quality Alert across the commonwealth for Friday, July 17.

For those with respiratory issues already in place, this increased irritation causes shortness of breath and frequent coughing spells.
